Measuring Your Windows: 3 Easy Steps To Correctly Measure Your Windows

Before learning how to put up venetian blinds, you should make sure you know how to measure your windows for blinds accurately. Let's go through the key 3 steps you should take in measuring your windows.

Measuring Your Windows

1. Choose your mount type

Start by looking at your window to decide how you want your blinds to fit - recess or face fit:

  • Recess Fit - Where the curtains or blinds are installed inside the window framing
  • Face Fit - Where the curtains or blinds are installed on or above the window framing (architrave)

2. Measure Your Window

Along with the different types of mount types, there are also different approaches taken to measuring for these specific fits.

Measuring for Recess Fit

Measure the width at 3 points across to check the window is square. If uneven, the narrowest of the 3 measurements is to be used.

Measure the drop at 3 points to check your window is square. If uneven, the shortest measurement will be used.

Keep in mind, if you do choose to recess fit your blinds, you will need to ensure that window locks or handles will not interfere with the blind. Light will also show through the gaps at either side. If you want greater light block out, then a face fit will be the better option for you.

Measuring For Recess Fit

Measuring for Face Fit (Outside Mount)

Measure the width of the window from the side of the architrave to the other outer side of the architrave. Measure the drop from the top of the architrave edge to the bottom of the sill or the floor.

3. Choose Your Blind Size

Record all of your measurements and window details. It's best to record your measurements in millimetres (mm). This will ensure accuracy of selecting the right sized blind for your windows. Once you've gathered all of your measurements, you can start shopping for your blinds.

What Do You Need to Install a Venetian Blind?

To install your venetian blind, you will need the following tools:

  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Drill
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Tape measure

Please note: Each package has detailed instructions inside that you should keep and read through thoroughly.

Select The Mount Method

Much like fits, there are a few different mount methods you can use in installing your venetian blind, including:

  • Inside mount to the inside or between the sides of the window frame
  • Outside mount to the face or outside of the window frame
  • Ceiling mount to an overhead surface such as the top inside of a window frame or the ceiling

Measure the Height

Measure where you want the blind to hang. Make sure the blind is centred and level. When it is positioned properly, make a small pencil mark at each side of the blind to show where you will attach the mounting brackets.

Mount the First Bracket

Hold one bracket at the desired height and width you have chosen (the large hole faces the floor) and mark the screw holes with a pencil. Then insert and tighten the screw through the bracket slot.

Mount the Second Bracket

After the first bracket is mounted, carefully position and attach the second bracket. Double check to be sure that it is level with the first bracket and that the brackets are the proper distance apart to fit the blind.

Slide in the Head Rail

Pick up the venetian blind and slide the head rail into the brackets. Make sure that the blind cord and the wand tilting collar face towards you. Close the front cap of each bracket. There should also be a cleat included in the pack for safe installation.

Child Safety Precautions

To avoid creating a possible strangulation hazard for children, the corded internal window covering must be installed in such a way that a loose cord cannot form a loop 220mm or longer at a height of less than 1600mm above floor level.

In order to install the product to avoid creating a possible strangulation hazard for children:

  • A cord guide may be installed lower than 1600mm above floor level if the cord is sufficiently secured or tensioned to prevent a loop 220mm or longer from being formed
  • If a cord guide is installed lower than 1600mm above floor level it must be designed to prevent a child from being able to remove the cord
  • If a cleat is used to secure the cord it must be at least 1600mm above floor level because a child is capable of unwinding a cord from a cleat
