Anna Blatman's Design Journey

After picking up a painting brush around 34 years ago when painting with one of her mother's friends, Anna quickly developed a passion for art. 6 months after this initial paint session, Anna had the confidence to venture out on her own and take her painting seriously. Independent with an incredible drive, Anna says she "always loved the impressionists and still [does]".

In creating a linen range in collaboration with KOO, Anna wanted to bring her favourite birds, florals and colours together. She wanted to create a range that perfectly balanced beauty and practicality while reflecting our Australian lifestyle. Diving into Anna's Creative Process and Inspirations

Drawing inspiration from her street, garden and the world around her, Anna says visits to the florists, soaring birds and trips to the country inspire the landscape of Anna Blatman's artwork.

Anna describes her style as a modern impression of how she sees the world around her. "I always thought that if I couldn't paint realistically, then I would just have to do what comes naturally, so just be myself," Anna says about her creative process.

When starting a piece, Anna usually knows what the theme will be, but still gives herself the creative freedom of completely changing it up if it's not working out in her mind. With ideas flooding constantly, Anna finds she has to be firm with herself to hold onto the vibe of the artwork. "It's not easy", she says.

If starting a floral in a vase, Anna would paint all of the dark tones first, along with a loose pot shape. Slowly over time, she would add the lighter tones, and from here, the Anna Blatman artwork will start to take its form. Many layers are applied to achieve the final product. Anna says the real talent is knowing when to stop.
