An Introduction to Jayne Branchflower

Australian designer, Jayne, is a licensing artist based in Bellingen, New South Wales. Here, the beautiful landscape of rainforest, rivers and rolling hills feeds her creativity daily. Jayne creates patterns and illustrations intended for products ranging from textiles to homewares to stationery. Her work is also used in surface design collaborations.

"My work is heavily influenced by florals, botanicals, and the natural world, and I love using colour in bold, unexpected ways." Jayne speaks of her work, "Nature has its own subtle palettes, so I take what I see and amplify it, exaggerating colours, playing with vibrancy, and creating artwork that feels energetic, joyful, and alive."

Diving into Jayne's Creative Process and Inspirations

With Jayne's work showcasing intricate fauna and floral patterns, it's no surprise that her biggest inspiration is nature. "There is endless inspiration in the world around us if you slow down enough to truly notice it," Jayne says of her inspirations, "When you look closely, you realise how many tiny flowers, birds, insects, textures, and patterns exist everywhere." Staying curious about the world around her is a useful tool Jayne has adopted, continuing to explore the beautiful landscapes around her to gain inspiration for her work.

Jayne's creative process always begins in nature, with Jayne spending time walking through the bush, taking in the detail of Australian wildlife. Once home, Jayne starts with a series of sketches to help get her ideas flowing, from her head to the page. She'll then start the painting process, using gouache, layering colours and textures in order to build depth and movement in her works.

When the paintings are complete, Jayne scans them into Photoshop, experimenting with refining the layout, adjusting colours to create repeat patterns, bringing the collection to life.

"Nothing compares to the excitement of seeing the final products for the first time. Knowing the journey began with a quiet walk in the bush makes it even more special." Jayne speaks of her creative process.

Introducing the KOO x Jayne Branchflower Range

In collaboration with KOO, Jayne's floral patterns and stunning nature themed designs have been produced into a curated collection of bed linen set to elevate your bedroom styling. With the collection drawing heavily from the beauty of the Australian native bush, Jayne wanted to capture the "feeling of wandering through the trees and suddenly spotting a flash of colour or a delicate bloom."

In designing the quilt cover, Australian kingfishers, banksias, waratahs and flannel flowers are the focus of the pattern, with each element showcasing its own character. Together, these details produce a story of Australia's rich flora and fauna.

The collection also includes a stylish coverlet and cushion. Jayne painted with a more expressive approach with these pieces, creating oversized flannel flowers on a rich background to bring depth and interest to any bedroom.

Jayne embraced a bright colour palette in her designs and worked to create a "collection that feels joyful, vibrant, and deeply connected to the landscape that inspired it."

Styling the Collection

In creating the collection, Jayne "added depth with contrasting colours". Jayne recommends pairing the light and fresh colours of the quilt cover set with the deep tones of the coverlet and cushion to create "a dynamic balance and a sense of richness in the final ensemble."

Pair the vibrant patterns with solid toned throws and cushions to allow Jayne's artistic fauna and floral patterns to become the forefront of your bedroom styling, refreshing your bedroom styling with the beauty of nature.

Jayne's Advice for Upcoming Artists

For aspiring artists looking to begin their creative journey, Jayne's advice is simply to just be yourself. "Your creative voice is already within you, and the more you honour it, the more it will shine", Jayne says of the importance of staying authentic to yourself.

Jayne urgers to not fear failure and instead embrace it as "the best work often comes from experimentation, play and happy accidents". Jayne recommends to continue to try new things, be vulnerable and simply get lost in the moment, enjoying the process of your art.
